Interesting article in MIT Technology Review regarding efforts to connect separate VW domains, e.g., so your avatar can move freely from 1 environment (e.g., SL) to another (e.g., There) -- this will require common standards, but some big name players are on board.

Social Mapping
There was an interesting article in the NY Times regarding social mapping that uses GPS technology to track users. One of the applications the article referenced is https://loopt.com/loopt/sess/index.aspx ... there are certainly a number of privacy issues that are relevant.
